What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is essentially the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. TMJ disorder, also known as TMD, is a condition that can cause pain and discomfort in the jaw and surrounding areas. Symptoms can include clicking or popping sounds when opening and closing your mouth, difficulty chewing, headaches, and even ear pain. There are a few different causes of TMJ disorder, including arthritis, genetics, and even stress. So, if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s always a good idea to check in with your dental professional to see if TMJ might be the culprit.

TMJ Mouthguards

We understand the impact that TMJ/TMD can have on your life. That’s why we offer bespoke, custom nightguards to help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with this condition. Our nightguards are tailor-made to fit the unique contours of your mouth, ensuring maximum comfort and effectiveness. We take great care to design our dental nightguards with top-of-the-line materials that are both durable and comfortable to wear. Plus, our considerate and upscale approach means that you can rest assured that you are receiving the highest quality of care.

Our dental professionals will create a mouthguard or nightguard that is specific to your needs, with the perfect fit and level of thickness. The guard may be for your upper or lower teeth, depending on the severity of the condition. The mouthguard works by stabilizing your jaw, providing support to the muscles around the joint, and preventing the clenching or grinding of your teeth. This greatly reduces the pressure on the joint and diminishes the pain and discomfort that you experience.

Signs of TMJ/TMD

We want to make sure you’re informed about many of the possible signs of this condition.

  • Chronic headaches: It’s not uncommon for individuals with TMJ/TMD to experience frequent headaches. These headaches may be located in the temples, forehead, or behind the eyes.
  • Jaw pain: TMJ/TMD can cause pain in the jaw joint, which is located just in front of the ear. This pain may be dull or sharp and may worsen when you open your mouth wide or chew.
  • Ear pain: The jaw joint is located close to the ear, so it’s possible to experience ear pain as a result of TMJ/TMD. This pain may be aching or sharp and may be mistaken for an ear infection.
  • Popping/clicking noises: TMJ/TMD can cause popping or clicking noises in the jaw joint when you open and close your mouth, yawn, or chew. These noises may be accompanied by pain or discomfort.
  • Locking of the jaw: In severe cases of TMJ/TMD, the jaw joint may lock, making it difficult to open or close your mouth. This may be painful and may require medical intervention.
  • Tooth sensitivity: TMJ/TMD can cause tooth sensitivity, particularly if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw. This sensitivity may extend to your gums, causing discomfort when you eat or drink.
  • Neck and shoulder pain: In some cases, TMJ/TMD can cause pain in the neck and shoulders. This pain may be the result of muscle tension, which can be caused by jaw misalignment.
